Local Transportation

Vienna has a well-developed public transport network. Buses, trains, trams and underground lines will take you almost anywhere in the city in no time at all. Vienna public transport Wiener Linien operates five underground lines, 29 tram and 127 bus lines, of which 24 are night lines. Night lines are only used between 0.30 am, and 5 am. On weekends and public holidays, the Vienna underground remains at the service of its passengers all night. A single ticket costs EUR 2.40.

Where to buy a ticket

  • ticket machines at most underground stations

  • points of advance sale

  • tobacconists also sell tickets

  • onboard the tram at an increased rate of EUR 2.60 per ticket

  • vienna felxi pass

  • buy tickets online: Wiener Linien Online Shop

Taxi: Getting a taxi - there are a few different ways to find a taxi in Vienna:

  • Pre-book by phone: your hotel and most tourist information centres will provide you with phone numbers for taxi companies and may even call them for you.

  • Use a taxi app: several free mobile phone applications are available that allow you to book a taxi in Vienna, see how long it will take and how much it will cost, and give you the option to pay by card.

  • Find a taxi stand: Vienna has many Taxistandplatzes throughout the city, where you can hop in a taxi.

The average cost of a short taxi journey in the city centre is usually between 7 and 12 euros, while a trip to the airport can cost anywhere from 35 to 55 euros. All taxis in Vienna are fitted with a meter, but we recommend confirming an approximate price for your journey with your driver before you get in. Not all taxis take card payments, although the various taxi applications available on mobile phones usually allow you to pay by card via the app.

Staying hydrated is always essential, particularly during a busy day at ISW 2022. Many visitors to a foreign city want to know if you can drink the water. In Vienna, mineral water comes out of the taps: the tap water in Vienna is generally very high quality, and drinking fountains are quite common in tourist areas.
